Mayo Mountain Rescue respond to late night call-out on Croagh Patrick
MAYO Mountain Rescue responded to a late night call-out for assistance on Croagh Patrick over the weekend.
The team received a call at 1 a.m. on Saturday to locate and ensure the safety of a man who had left to climb the mountain at about 7 p.m. on Friday night.
He phoned his family around 10 p.m. and informed them that he intended to spend the night at the summit.
As the weather was deteriorating and the family were then unable to contact him by phone, they called 999 for mountain rescue assistance, MMRT reported on their social media.
Four mountain rescue members were dispatched to climb the Reek, two up the pilgrim path from Murrisk and two from the mountain rescue base at the south side of the Reek.
The man was located at 1.40 a.m. sheltering near the church on the summit. He was in good spirits, though very cold and wet, and was very happy to be assisted off the mountain in extremely bad weather conditions.
Members helped the man walk safely off the mountain to his much relieved family who had driven to the base at the back of the Reek.
The team was stood down at 4.15 a.m.
