Over €80,000 raised for Mayo Roscommon Hospice through family challenge

A phenomenal sum of €81,378 has been raised for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation through a community effort led by the Brennan family in memory of their beloved son and brother, Seamus.

The Brennan family launched The Mayo Challenge to honour Seamus while giving back to the hospice that provided him with exceptional care and compassion.

Friends, family and colleagues united to take on this three-part endurance challenge – running a half-marathon, cycling the scenic Mayo Greenway, and climbing the iconic Croagh Patrick – as a tribute to Seamus’s courage and the resilience of those who supported him.

Building on the momentum of The Mayo Challenge, the Brennan family also ran an exclusive Oasis premium tickets raffle on iDonate. Supporters had the chance to win four premium tickets in total for the band’s upcoming concerts at Croke Park. Every raffle ticket purchased directly supports the Foundation’s vital palliative care work.

Brian Brennan said: “We organised a fundraising event, in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation to mark the first anniversary of our beloved son and brother, Seamus, who sadly passed away in the hospice last August. As a family, we wanted to do something meaningful to honour the memory of Seamus. In remembering Seamus’s strength, warmth and spirit, we wanted to give back to the hospice that provided him with such exceptional care and compassion.”

Added Brian: “Our deep gratitude to the hospice team inspired us to create a heartfelt challenge, The Mayo Challenge, that would reflect Seamus’s courage and the resilience of those who supported him.

“The Mayo Challenge involved three parts: running a half-marathon, cycling the scenic Mayo Greenway, and climbing the iconic Croagh Patrick, all on the same day – July 5th. In addition to this, we organised an Oasis raffle in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice, whereby we raffled four tickets to see Oasis play in Croke Park.”

Founded in 1993, the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation funds, develops and delivers palliative care services to individuals living with life-limiting illnesses. Over the past 32 years, the Foundation’s palliative care teams have supported more than 25,000 patients and their families, both in local communities and dedicated hospice facilities.

This fundraising milestone comes as the Foundation celebrates over two years since the opening of the Roscommon Hospice and four years since Mayo Hospice began welcoming patients in Castlebar. Both facilities – fully funded by public donations totalling €16.3 million – represent major achievements for the Foundation and the communities they serve.

Since 1993, Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation has supported more than 20,000 patients and families living with life-limiting illnesses across the two counties.

Martina Jennings, CEO of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, commented: “The Brennan family’s generosity and determination have been nothing short of inspiring. This incredible community effort shows what’s possible when people come together for a cause close to their hearts.

“We’re deeply thankful to every single person who has donated, joined the challenge, or supported the raffle. This huge donation will go a long way in supporting those in our community who are living with life-limiting illnesses, ensuring they receive the compassionate, specialist care they deserve, and providing comfort and dignity to them and their loved ones during the most difficult of times.”
