Passing of 100-year-old Mayo native in the US evoks great sadness

There is great sadness in Tourmakeady and among the Mayo diaspora at the news of the passing of William (Liam) O’Malley in the United States at the age of 100.

Born on March 11, 1925, to William and Bridget (Lydon) O’Malley, Liam was one of 11 children and grew up in Tourmakeady before emigrating. He passed away peacefully on August 4.

Liam was the beloved husband of Nina (Flannery) O’Malley, father to Colm O’Malley (Lynn Ross) and John O’Malley (Wendy Blackstone), and is survived by his sister Peggy Heneghan, sisters-in-law Mary Hoban and Sr. Betty Flannery, and the extended Flannery family. He was a cherished uncle to the O’Malley, Heneghan, Durkin, Curtis and Daly families, and a dear friend to many.

A man of many “old world” skills, Liam was a talented artisan, skilled in gilding, painting, plastering and wallpapering. A self-taught artist, his paintings often depicted the landscapes and people of his native Mayo. Known as a captivating storyteller with a remarkable memory, he also had a gift for humour and took great joy in making people laugh.

He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
