Mayo club's Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others group heading to the Big Apple!
The Castlebar Mitchels Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others group have been officially selected to represent Mayo at the prestigious Festival of Football in New York this coming October.
This marks a major milestone for the team as it will be their first time competing internationally.
A total of 21 women will travel to the United States to take part in this global celebration of Gaelic football, joining other teams from Ireland and around the world for what will be an historic occasion.
“It’s an incredible honour to wear the Castlebar colours and represent Mayo on an international stage,” said team spokesperson Barbara Tighe, who added: “It’s a dream come true and a testament to the dedication, teamwork, and community spirit that defines our club.”
The team has extended heartfelt thanks to Castlebar Mitchels LGFA, Mayo LGFA, their coaches, and the wider GAA community for helping make opportunities like this possible.
They also acknowledged the overwhelming support from the people of Castlebar and Mayo, which has been instrumental in preparing for the trip.
Castlebar Mitchels Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others is a vibrant and inclusive club that promotes fitness, fun and friendship through Gaelic football.
The travelling panel includes women who are not only players but also active coaches and volunteers across a wide range of local sporting organisations, including Castlebar Mitchels LGFA, Castlebar Mitchels GAA, Breaffy LGFA, Castlebar Town FC, Snugboro United FC, and Castlebar Racquetball Club.
Their involvement highlights the team’s deep-rooted commitment to sport, leadership and community development throughout the region.
In the lead-up to their departure, the team will be organising a series of fundraising events to help cover travel and participation costs. They are calling on the people of Mayo to continue their support as they proudly prepare to represent the county on the international stage.
