Mayo singer Cathal Gavin releasing his debut single this week
THE meteoric rise of singer Cathal Gavin continues apace with the release of his debut single ‘Out of Love’ to take place on Friday, August 15.
The Swinford native is one of Ireland’s brightest young talents, and he entered the music scene at just 13 years old in 2015 with the release of eight songs on a charity CD titled Voice of an Angel, which included some well-known Christmas favourites such as ‘Walking in the Air’ and ‘Oh Holy Night’.
Over the past 10 years, Cathal has performed on some of the most prestigious stages and shared the spotlight with the country’s top recording artists.
Alongside this, he has remained dedicated to philanthropic endeavours, using proceeds from his album sales and charitable appearances to support various causes such as Alzheimer’s and cancer research.
One of Cathal’s most memorable performances came at the 2019 World Youth Day in Panama City, Central America, where he sang for Pope Francis before 250,000 people - the youngest Irish artist ever to perform at the event, aged 16. Broadcast to over 37 million viewers worldwide, this performance was a defining moment in his career.
Cathal has also made his mark with powerful recordings and gained listenership in over 60 countries while garnering hundreds of thousands of views across social media platforms.
Alongside his academic and vocal development, Cathal has been writing original material and exploring diverse musical styles with the support of acclaimed producer Billy Farrell in Dublin.
On this latest chapter in his career, he said: “It is hard to believe that the single is about to be released, and it was a long journey and process.
“I met Billy Farrell and we went through various demo ideas. I wrote ‘Out of Love’ in March of last year when I was in college. I started off by playing it on the piano.
“I also had Deirdre Masterson as my vocals coach and she was excellent and brought my voice to a new level.”
A concert in Westport House last October helped Cathal’s career develop even further, as he explained: “That really helped as you could get the feedback from a live audience, which is great compared to just recording songs in the studio.”
Cathal will graduate from college in October, and there is also an album in the pipeline. “On September 25, I will play a concert in the Sugar Club, Dublin, which has a capacity of 350 and that is something I am really looking forward to. The likes of Hozier has played there and it is a fantastic venue.
“I also have an album in the pipeline, and I have two to three songs in mind for that.
“We will begin rehearsals in a couple of weeks’ time for what will be a busy schedule.”
