Motorists ignoring parking restrictions at busy Mayo beach during heatwave
MOTORISTS are ignoring parking restrictions on one of Mayo's busiest beaches, The Connaught Telegraph can reveal.
They are continuing to park their vehicles on double yellow lines at Keem Bay in Achill.
This is causing problems in respect of the free-flow of traffic to and from the scenic spot - and raises questions about access in the event of an ambulance being called to the scene in an emergency situation.
While some additional parking spaces have been provided at the location, it is wholly short of accommodating the large number of visitors during this week's heatwave.
A number of visitors to the beach yesterday expressed the need for daily enforcement by Mayo County Council employees or An Garda Síochána of the parking restrictions there.
There also highlighted the need to halt the further access of cars to Keem Bay once all parking spaces are filled.
An Garda Síochána closed access to the area a number of weeks ago during a similar spell of sunny weather.
With Thursday expected to be the hottest day of the week, the need for swift action on the matter is now very apparent.
There are a number of other fine beaches within close proximity to Keem.
They include Keel and the two beaches in Dugort.
