Castlebar Tidy Towns launch housing estate competition

CASTLEBAR Tidy Towns have officially launched their 2025 housing estate competition at Cois Abhann, the overall winners of the 2024 competition.

The event marks the beginning of what promises to be another exciting and community-driven initiative, encouraging pride of place across Castlebar’s housing estates and residential areas.

The competition is open to all estates and housing areas in Castlebar and its environs, and entry is completely free. Independent adjudicators will assess shortlisted estates and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each of the following categories: small, medium and large estates.

Judging will be based on the following criteria: presentation and overall impact, tidiness and litter control, entrance signage and presentation, maintenance of green spaces and floral arrangements and displays, landscaping and nature, boundary walls and fencing, weed control, and maintenance of individual houses and gardens.

Ger Deere, chairperson of Castlebar Tidy Towns, commended the residents of Cois Abhann on their outstanding achievement in last year’s competition.

He noted: “Cois Abhann is a shining example of community spirit and what can be achieved when residents come together. Their commitment has not only enhanced the local environment but also reflects the pride they take in their area.

“Housing estates play a vital role in our overall Tidy Towns campaign, as they are included in the national adjudication process. Their appearance and upkeep greatly influence our overall standing.”

He also praised Stephen Guthrie and his committee, acknowledging their 'tireless work and leadership in bringing people together'.

Stephen Guthrie extended his thanks to all the residents of Cois Abhann for their continued support and contribution to fundraising efforts.

“This result was truly a team effort. I am very grateful to all our neighbours for their hard work and for standing behind our projects. A special thank you to Joe Mangan and the team at Mayo County Council for their help throughout.”

Last year’s adjudicators praised the high level of community engagement and innovation, particularly the collaboration between residents and Mayo County Council. They also highlighted examples of best practice in estate enhancement and sustainable maintenance.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in November or December, at a venue to be confirmed.
