Disability group has concerns about courtesy crossing in Mayo county town centre

THE courtesy crossing on Linenhall Street in Castlebar is a cause of concern.

A disability group has been in touch with Councillor Harry Barrett about it and other issues in the town.

People are finding it hard to use the crossing from the arch at SuperValu and across Linenhall Street.

It's dangerous with the amount of traffic on the street and consideration has to be given to turning it into a proper pedestrian crossing, Councillor Barrett told a municipal district meeting.

“It's a bit of a running the gauntlet situation,” he said, especially for an older person who don't know if they have priority or not and it will cause an accident.

Other issues around the town include loose paving and cracked manhole covers on footpaths on Thomas Street and Staball. And at the Linenhall Street traffic lights, the green man doesn't always function.
