Witness appeal following serious Mayo traffic collision

GARDAÍ are appealing for witnesses to a serious traffic accident that occurred in west Mayo on Sunday evening.

The gardaí and emergency services attended the scene following a report of a serious injury two-vehicle collision at Castlebar Road, Newport, yesterday (Sunday).

The collision, involving a car and a motorcycle, occurred at approximately 4.50 p.m.

The motorcyclist, a man aged in his 50s, was discovered with serious injuries at the scene. He received medical treatment and was conveyed to Mayo University hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

No other injuries were reported at the time.

The road was preserved for technical examination by garda forensic collision investigators. It has since reopened.

A man (aged in his 60s) was later arrested in connection with the investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area of Castlebar Road, Newport, between 4 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
