Six Mayo GOAL Miles raise over €18,000 in 2024
A meeting has been held in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, to review the 2024 GOAL Miles that took place in Mayo and Roscommon and to start planning for the 2025 events.
Brenda Gatley of GOAL thanked everyone for attending and also thanked both the Mayo and Roscommon GOAL Mile organisers.
In 2024, sis GOAL Miles took place in Mayo (Ballina, Castlebar, Westport, Louisburgh, Mayo Abbey and Ballinrobe) and raised €18,264.42. This was a €3,000 increase on 2023.
In 2024 there were three GOAL Miles in Roscommon, where €1,842 was raised. Unlike Mayo, these GOAL miles are in their infancy.
In total, the GOAL Mile locations increased from 160 to 200 in 2024. Because of the support from all over the country and beyond, income increased to €750,000.
Well done to all involved in the Ballina GOAL Mile in Belleek, which raised the most funds outside of the big Dublin GOAL Miles.
Thanks to the donations GOAL receives, the charity was able to support 12.5 million people in the areas most needed due to war, drought, starvation, etc, in 2024.
Last January, USAID and other major donors cut humanitarian funding, forcing critical programmes to pause just when they are needed most. This came at a time when more people than ever are going hungry, displaced, or living without access to healthcare.
These cuts meant GOAL had to pause or cancel life-saving programmes across the countries where they work and reduce both overseas and HQ staffing. Because of this, the 2025 Miles need to be better than ever.
