Long-serving west Mayo postman retires after storied career

Eamon Moran, the long-serving postman at Westport DSU, retired last week after a storied career spanning many years and routes.

For the past dozen years, Eamon covered the Dooagh route in Achill with the same care and courtesy that marked his daily rounds.

Eamon’s gentle and obliging manner earned the respect and affection of his customers, a testament to his steadfast spirit and sense of community.

Beyond the post, Eamon is a man of many talents. He drove diggers with ease and nurtured his own vegetable garden, bringing a touch of skill and patience to everything he did.

He also achieved a distinguished sporting feat: winning the Westport An Post Cycling Championship.

Although not a renowned cyclist, Eamon knuckled down with perseverance, training under coach John Nixon. On race day, he executed a bold breakaway to finish first, edging out seasoned competitors and earning his place wearing the yellow jersey to this day.

As Eamon looks toward retirement, his colleagues, customers and neighbors send their best wishes for health, happiness, and well-deserved rest.

Earlier this month, the staff and community at An Post bid a fond farewell to Michael Duffy, another beloved postal delivery man who hung up his cap after an impressive 38 years of dedicated service. Throughout his career, Michael was a familiar and friendly face, delivering mail across the Westport area with pride and professionalism.
