An exciting Mayo LGFA championship season in store after super launch
THE 2025 Mayo LGFA adult club championships have been officislly launched at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.
In what was a superbly run event, club representatives, players, managers and Mayo LGFA officials were in attendance, which helped showcase the clubs and athletes before the respective club championship’s gets underway on the week ending August 30/31.
The championships commence on Saturday, August 30, with a full round of fixtures of Junior (B) action, whilst on Sunday, August 31, Junior (A), Intermediate, and Senior round one fixtures dominate the Mayo LGFA scene.
Speaking after the launch, Mayo LGFA chairperson Sinéad Stagg said:
“I was delighted with the turnout, and it was great to see all of the clubs coming together in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park for the launch.
You need the clubs to answer the call for a night like this, and they did that in their numbers. I think all the clubs are looking forward to August 30 and 31.
We had the league finals last weekend in Bekan and there were some really competitive games and everybody is looking forward to what will be a very competitive club championship.”
The senior championship clash between Charlestown and Carnacon on August 31 has the makings of a classic. Charlestown manager Sinead Halligan said the east Mayo side have added youth to their panel.
“We have had some minor players make the step up and they have boosted our playing numbers, and they have brought some youth to the panel.
The fine weather has been a big help and it really feels like championship weather at this stage. There is a good energy at training and we are all looking forward to the first round.”
This is Sinead’s first time managing at senior level; however, she has garnered lots of coaching experience over the years.
“I am lucky enough in the fact that I have been working with different management teams in different areas over the last 10 years, between the Charlestown ladies’ team and the Charlestown men’s team.
“I have also managed underage teams. This is my first time managing at senior level and it’s a big step up, however, I am enjoying it. This is my third year in total being involved with the ladies’ team, so I have that experience which will help me at senior management level.”
There are also plenty of teams vying for junior honours, with Ballinrobe perhaps a dark horse for the Junior (B) title. The Robesiders begin their campaign with an away tie against south Mayo rivals Shrule/Glencorrib, on Saturday, August 30.
Ballinrobe captain Ailíse Burke is delighted to be back playing with her local club.
“I love playing for Ballinrobe and it is great that the club made a return three years ago. I hadn’t played for Ballinrobe in years, and it has been great in recent years to be back playing for the local club.”
Ailíse explained that this year is a transition period for the Ballinrobe junior team.
“I think a good year for us would be that the team continues to gel as a group and we are progressing. Silverware is obviously something you look for, but the main thing is to transfer what we are learning in our training sessions into game situations.
We are not getting ahead of ourselves, and this is a transition year for us.”
