Fears over pedestrian safety hazard in Mayo tourist town
A concerned member of the public has highlighting a serious safety hazard at the pedestrian crossing on the North Mall, Westport.
The person told The Connaught Telegraph: "For months now, the green man signal has been completely out of order.
"The red man works, but when it should turn green, the display goes black.
"There is a countdown timer, but it is invisible — meaning pedestrians are left guessing whether it is safe to cross.
"This is not just an inconvenience — it is an accident waiting to happen.
"The crossing is located on a blind corner, and anyone taking a chance to cross risks being struck by cars turning right up the North Mall.
"This is a real danger for everyone, particularly children, elderly residents, and those with visual impairments.
"The fact that this fault has been left unfixed for months is unacceptable.
"A pedestrian crossing is meant to protect people, not put them in harm’s way."
The matter has been brought to the attention of local elected representatives in the town.
