Mayo university welcomes response to appeal for student accommodation

Atlantic Technological University (ATU) has welcomed the strong response from homeowners and landlords across the West and North West since the launch of its accommodation appeal.

Thanks to the support of communities in Galway, Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal, more than 400 student beds have already been made available for the upcoming academic year.

The appeal, which encouraged people to offer spare rooms under the national Rent-a-Room scheme, has been supported through a university-wide campaign of social media, local press, flyer drops, and posters.

ATU President, Dr Orla Flynn, expressed her gratitude to those who have stepped forward.

“We are deeply thankful to the many landlords and homeowners who have opened their doors and offered rooms to our students.

"This support is making a real difference to young people and their families at a critical time, giving them the chance to begin or continue their studies with less stress and uncertainty. It is heartening to see communities across our region respond with such generosity.”

Despite the positive progress, ATU continues to emphasise the urgent need for more accommodation as demand remains high across all campuses.

Dr Flynn added: “While the response has been hugely encouraging, we still need many more beds. We know there are families, couples, and individuals across the region who may have a spare room and have not yet considered this option.

"By joining the scheme, you can not only support a student’s education journey but also benefit financially through the tax-free Rent-a-Room scheme. Every single room makes a difference.”

Living with a student is not only about providing a roof, but also about making connections that strengthen local communities.

Students contribute to the cultural and economic life of the region through part-time jobs, volunteering, and placements with local businesses and services.

The university is once again urging homeowners and landlords who may be in a position to help to register their interest through the ATU website or their local student accommodation office in Galway, Sligo, Letterkenny or Mayo.
