Plans for new south Mayo community facility reaches significant milestone
PLANS to develop a Community Sports and Recreational Centre in Claremorris have reached a major milestone with the submission of a planning application to Mayo County Council.
This follows a series of progressive milestones for the project in 2025: The lip sync battles fundraiser in February, and the completion of phase 1 of the feasibility study to assess the viability of the proposed project.
With the submission of a planning application now in place, the project is another step closer to being ‘shovel-ready’ - a key criteria for any State funding application.
The committee looks forward to engaging further with Minister Dara Calleary on the Community Centres Investment Fund - New Builds Measure, which was set up by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht in 2023 to invest in new and ambitious community projects.
The centre will have the following facilities: a modern indoor sports hall; high-quality changing facilities; a safe space for youth groups; multi-functional rooms for events, workshops and community use.
Basketball Ireland and Badminton Ireland have officially expressed their support for the development of this facility and have committed to using the facility for regional games and training and possibly even using it for international sessions.
They recognise the ever-greater demand for sporting opportunities in the region and see the addition of these sports in Claremorris as a way to welcome and include people of all abilities, genders, and cultural backgrounds.
Over the months ahead, the Claremorris Community Sports and Recreational Centre committee will continue to build up vital funds for the project through fundraising and sponsorship efforts.
They will be seeking further support from government bodies, Mayo County Council, local businesses and the wider community to bring this vision to life, and are very thankful for the positive engagement and support to date.
