Fewer homes being built in Mayo as construction slows

Mayo recorded some of the lowest levels of new construction in the country over the past year, according to the latest GeoDirectory report.

As of June 2025, just 522 buildings were under construction in Mayo, representing 2.3% of national building activity. By comparison, Dublin alone accounted for 3,979 construction sites, or almost 17% of the State total.

The slowdown reflects wider national trends. Housing commencements fell by 21.3% across Ireland in the year to June 2025, following a post-Covid surge in 2024 driven by temporary levy waivers and connection rebates.

In Connaught, Mayo trails behind Galway, which accounted for 5.4% of all construction activity nationwide.
