Complaints aired over standard of street lighting in Mayo town
An elected representative has received number of complaints about broken street lights along the stretch of road between Mulroy’s Garage and Cuan Cathríona Nursing Home in Castlebar.
Councillor Harry Barrett said this road is in darkness and is a safety risk for walkers.
He elaborated: "One constituent told me they nearly struck a pedestrian wearing dark clothing while crossing there.
"This is a serious safety issue and it needs to be fixed without delay.
"I have been in contact with Electric Skyline and they have confirmed that there is a fuse problem at this location.
"They have also advised me that excavation works will be needed to resolve the fault. I will be following up to ensure these works are carried out as soon as possible.
"In addition, lights are out at Rock Square in Castlebar and I have asked that these be repaired.
"I am also calling for a full audit of defective street lighting in Castlebar to be carried out before the onset of winter, so that no other dangerous blackspots are left unaddressed.
"Public safety must come first. Street lighting is a basic service and I will continue to press until these faults are sorted and proper lighting is restored."
