Landmark Mayo building being sold in HSE property auction
Two well-known buildings in the west are poised for a fresh start as part of a nationwide sale of former HSE properties.
The former Health Centre on Main Street, Loughrea, and Hill House on Mountain View, Castlebar, will both go to auction next month with O’Donnellan & Joyce, offering the chance to bring new life to familiar local landmarks.
Hill House, a four-storey building of 377 sqm, comes to market with an asking price of €225,000.
Located within walking distance of Mayo University Hospital and the TF Royal Hotel and Theatre, the property includes rear parking and offers scope for a range of future uses, from commercial to community or residential redevelopment, subject to planning.
Once a familiar HSE facility, it is now set to begin a new chapter in Castlebar’s town centre.
In Loughrea, the substantial three-storey terraced Health Centre, with an asking price of €280,000, extends to over 430 sqm on a site of approximately 0.5 acres.
Adjoining Bank of Ireland and Walsh Pharmacy, the property is a central feature of the town and includes a detached rear structure, formerly a playschool. Its distinctive façade has long been part of Loughrea’s streetscape, and now it is ready to be repurposed for modern use.
Both properties are part of a broader trend across Ireland, as former HSE buildings are released for sale to be restored and repurposed.
The September auction also includes the former health centre in Carrick, Co. Donegal, a doctor’s residence in Blacklion, Co. Cavan, the old Health Centre in Aughrim, Co. Galway, and Sliabhan House overlooking Lough Gill in Co. Sligo.
Auctioneer Colm O’Donnellan said: “These buildings have long been part of their communities.
"Their sale represents a real opportunity to renew them for a new generation, whether as homes, businesses, or community spaces. It’s a story of continuity as much as change, breathing new life into places people know and remember.”
The properties will be offered at O’Donnellan & Joyce’s national live stream auction on Friday, September 19, at 12 noon. Bidding will be available by phone or online only, with pre-registration required.
