Mayo call for ban on election posters in upcoming presidential race
A Westport-based Fianna Fáil councillor has called on all parties and candidates to agree a ban on election posters ahead of the forthcoming presidential election.
Councillor Brendan Mulroy, who has himself contested two elections without using posters, said the time has come to consign the practice to history.
Highlighting both road safety and environmental concerns, he pointed to the dangers posed by posters in busy or hazardous locations, as well as the long-standing issue of plastic waste and cable ties left behind after campaigns.
“I don’t think a poster ever won an election,” he remarked, urging candidates to seek out alternative ways of reaching the public during the campaign.
The Presidential election is set to take place on October, 24.
