Road safety concern at south Mayo village

ROAD safety concerns at Ardkill village in south Mayo have been raised by Councillor Patsy O'Brien.

In a notice of motion, he requested Mayo County Council to carry out a safety audit on the entrance to Ardkill village, on the Roundfort side.

In a report, the council said the junction has been inspected, and sightline visibility is substandard.

Improvements could be funded through an application for low-cost safety improvement works or by commitment of notice of motion funding, which could be on a phased basis.

Councillor O'Brien said there is a hill that needs to be removed and he would like to move the location forward for a low-cost safety scheme.

In the interim he asked the council for a sign showing there is a road at the location.

Councillor Damien Ryan said there is zero visibility and the location has an accident history.

Remedying it would require substantial money and he was prepared to allocate notice of motion funding towards it.
