Progress on transforming the old post office at Mountain View, Castlebar, into a youth centre.

'Visible progress' cited in tackling a series of long-standing Mayo town issues

The head of the Castlebar Municipal District has spoken about the the challenges and opportunities facing the county town.

David Mellett acknowledged dereliction as a long-standing issue, but pointed to visible progress.

The old post office is being redeveloped into a new youth centre, while social housing projects on Upper Charles Street hurtle towards completion and works are set to commence at Barrack Bridge to turn dilapidated townhouses into much needed accommodation.

Other major projects are also advancing.

A multi-disciplinary design team is to be appointed shortly for an innovation hub at the former Imperial Hotel site, while Part 8 planning is expected soon for the derelict Ellison Street property, described by Mellett as ‘an absolute eyesore’.

It is hoped the project will go out tender in the coming months.

Mr. Mellett also praised private enterprise for its role in rejuvenating the town, highlighting developments such as the Bridge Street Pub expansion and the new Fadden’s commercial space on Main Street.

He said these projects, along with events like the Connacht rugby fixture, the women’s mini-marathon and Christmas in Castlebar, show that the county town is moving forward with confidence.

Mr. Mellett was speaking at a Castlebar Chamber of Commerce event.
