Tender open for 37 new social homes in major Mayo investment

Castlebar is set to get 37 more social housing units as part of the ongoing Lios na Circe development in Saleen, Minister of State Alan Dillon TD has confirmed.

This is the third phase of the project, which will eventually deliver 118 new homes for the Castlebar community.

Led by Mayo County Council, the project is part of the Government’s Housing for All plan to provide modern, high-quality homes in towns across Ireland.

Minister Dillon said: “Getting this third phase to tender is a big step forward.

"This isn’t just about building houses – it’s about building a strong community in Castlebar. Families, older people, and those with special needs will all benefit from safe, modern homes.”

So far, 59 homes have been completed in Phase One, with 22 more delivered in Phase Two in 2024.

Phase Three will bring:

• 10 two-bedroom houses

• 15 three-bedroom houses

• 3 side-access three-bedroom houses

• 4 two-bedroom universal access bungalows

• 4 accessible apartments

• 1 four-bedroom special needs unit

The new homes will be built around a green space, helping to create a welcoming, community-focused neighbourhood.

Minister Dillon added: “This development is a game-changer for Castlebar. It’s about more than housing – it’s about quality of life.

"We’re also seeing progress right across Mayo, with projects in Ballinrobe, Bonniconlon, Ballyhaunis, Claremorris, Cross, Ballyvary, and Carnacon.”

Between 2022 and 2024, Mayo County Council delivered 304 new homes countywide, with many more underway.

Minister Dillon concluded: “I’m proud to support Mayo County Council as they deliver this ambitious project.

"Lios na Circe is a great example of what can be achieved when we plan well and work together. This is a good day for Castlebar and Mayo.”
