Mayo's Ballintubber Abbey Choir grieves loss of 'a wonderful voice'
The death of Martin (Máirtín) Gibbons, Creevagh, Ballintubber, has evoked an immense sense of loss in the west Mayo parish.
The deceased was a member of the Ballintubber Abbey Choir for many years.
A tribute by the abbey stated: "Máirtín will be remembered not only as a devoted husband, brother, uncle, and friend, but also as a cherished member of the Ballintubber Abbey community.
"He was among the longest-serving members of the Abbey Choir, joining when it first came together in 2012.
"With a wonderful voice and a deep love of music, Máirtín brought joy to countless liturgies, choir gatherings and celebrations.
"Proudly wearing the black suit and red choir tie with the Abbey crest, he was always punctual for choir practice and Mass.
"He especially loved to sing “This World Is Not My Home” by Jim Reeves, a song that captured both his faith and his gentle spirit.
"Máirtín also contributed to the choir’s CD recording, and he was a regular participant in the Passion Play for many years.
"Beyond music, Máirtín’s love for nature and animals, his kindness, and his quiet generosity touched all who knew him.
"Both he and Anne faithfully dedicated themselves to Adoration at the Abbey, living their faith in a quiet but powerful way.
"The Abbey community and his many friends mourn his passing deeply, giving thanks for the gift of his life and the joy he shared so freely.
"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."
He is deeply regretted and sadly missed by his heartbroken wife Anne (née Wall, Cong), his sisters Bridie Gibbons (Claremorris), Martina (Tina) Cody (Kilkenny), Frances Mulkeen (Claremorris), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, wonderful neighbours, and a wide circle of friends.
Sympathy is tendered to the bereaved family on their loss.
Máirtín was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Julia Gibbons, and his sister, Mary Griffith (Balla).
Reposing at Ballintubber Resource Centre this evening (Wednesday) from 5 until 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass on Thursday in Ballintubber Abbey at 12 noon, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
