Reach out and help change the narrative this World Suicide Prevention Day
MARKING World Suicide Prevention Day 2025, the HSE is highlighting its award-winning ‘Let’s Talk About Suicide’ online training course and other steps to take to help save lives from suicide.
‘Let’s Talk About Suicide’ is a free, online suicide prevention training programme.
John Meehan, HSE Assistant National Director Access, and Integration and Head of the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP), said: “Sadly, over 500 people lose their lives to suicide in Ireland. It can affect every one of us. By raising awareness and encouraging a culture of compassion, openness and support, we can help to reduce silence, related stigma, and help save lives.
“The HSE is proud to provide free, accessible online training which empowers people with the knowledge and skills to talk about suicide safely. The training takes just 60 minutes, and I’d encourage people to sign up today. Whether in personal or professional settings, each and every one of us can play a part in helping reduce suicide in our communities.”
People can access the online training here.
There are additional steps to support yourself and others and they are as follows:
Reach out and check in: take time to connect with loved ones, and people around you. A simple check-in can bring hope and make a real difference.
Be kind, your words matter: speak with kindness and empathy when talking about suicide. Everyone affected – whether they’ve lost someone or struggled themselves – deserves dignity and respect.
Stay safe online: share information about suicide or self-harm responsibly and supportively. Help create a safer, more sensitive online space for everyone.
Advice for online safety is available here.
Help is available if you need it. You can familiarise yourself with local and national supports and services here.
Knowing where to turn can make a meaningful difference.
Further suicide prevention training programmes from the HSE are also available. These include safeTALK, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), Understanding Self-harm, and Suicide Bereavement Workshops. Find out more about these programmes in your area by visiting here.
The international theme of World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) this year is 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide'. Suicide is a serious global public health issue, with over 700,000 lives lost each year. This year’s theme calls on people, communities, and organisations to foster open, and honest conversations about suicide.
