Fond tributes to retired Mayo nurse on her passing
The death of Noreen Gavin (Nora P.) (née Maher), Cloughanover, Headford, Co. Galway, and formerly of Tourmakeady, is widely mourned.
In her 97th year, she died peacefully at home with her daughter Dolores and family.
A popular and dedicated member of the nursing staff at Mayo University Hospital for many years, she was held in high esteem in the community at large.
Warm tributes are being paid to her on social media where she was lauded for her kind and caring nature.
One stated: "I have lovely memories of Noreen in ICU at Castlebar Hospital in the 1980's - so capable, kind and a fantastic mentor."
Another said: "A most wonderful, gentle lady."
A former colleague observed: "She was a most caring, gentle nurse and a joy to work with."
Predeceased by her beloved husband Tommie and her infant son John, Noreen deeply missed by her family: Ann English, Adrian, Dolores Doyle, Joe, Paul, Tomás and Diarmuid, sons-in-law Brian English and John Doyle, daughters-in-law Mary, Martina, Trish, Helen and Deirdre, 23 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, brother Tony and his wife Margaret (Ennis), sisters Crissie Pringle (USA) and Grace Cock, and her husband Jim (UK), nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom heartfelt sympathy is tendered.
Remains will repose at Carey’s Funeral Home, Claran Road, Headford (H91 E6X9), this evening (Saturday) from 5 until 7pm.
Removal from her home on Sunday morning to arrive at St. Mary’s Church, Tourmakeady, for Requiem Mass at 11.30 a.m.
Burial takes place afterwards in Guesdian Cemetery, Ballinafad.
