Historic 'super six' success for talented Mayo boxer Natalia
Castlebar Boxing Club is celebrating a sixth national title by one of its boxers, Natalia Fasciszewska.
She achieved it at the Under-23 national championship in Dublin.
Facing of against a formidable opponent in the shape of Esther Lambe, Setanta Boxing Club, Natalia displayed her class.
Lambe, herself, is an extremely experienced boxer with multiple national titles, multiple international medals, and also a two-time European medal winner.
This was a contest that everyone in the National Stadium was waiting for, with a place on the team for the European U23 championships at stake.
From the first bell Lambe went on the front foot looking to take the fight to the Castlebar boxer.
This tactic just suited Fasciszewska, a counterpunching southpaw. The more Lambe came forward the better Natalia got.
Scoring with precise and powerful punching, forcing the referee to intervene near the end of the first to issue a standing count to Lambe.
Knowing that the first round was lost, the Setanta boxer had no option but to stay on the attack, but only continued to find the big left hand of the Castlebar boxer.
Three rounds won, Natalia gets her hand raised, national Under-23 champion.
Natalia has been selected for high performance squad training in Dublin with the European championships a very real target in the very near future.
Meanwhile, Rasheed Momoh of Castlebar Boxing Club continues to impress in a sport he came to very late.
Winner of a senior novice boxing title two years ago, he entered the Under-23 championships with a very real chance of lifting the title.
Winning his quarterfinal 5-0 and his semi-final 4-1, he had put himself as the favourite for the final only to come up short in the result. 1-4 to the Dublin boxer.
He could probably count himself unlucky in this decision but it's also huge experience gained for the Castlebar boxer.
Overall, a very successful championships for the Castlebar BC.
