The lighthouse on Clare Island.

Unique art project on Mayo island

CLARE Island is set to host SÚIL - The Loss of the Light, a participative sculptural walk that invites people of all ages and abilities to connect with the landscape, each other, and the creative process.

This year's theme commemorates the 60th year since the decommissioning and loss of the light of the Clare Island Lighthouse - a poignant moment in history and for the island.

Led by artist Clare McLaughlin, the project is rooted in community engagement. In the week leading up to the event on Saturday, September 27, McLaughlin will live and work on the island, collaborating with residents to shape the walk’s theme and final sculpture.

“This is about listening to the land and the people,” said McLaughlin. “The sculpture is not just an object - it’s a reflection of shared experience.”

As local development manager Joanne Carroll explained: “We were delighted when Clare connected with us. It’s so important that we take the time to commemorate and reflect on our history and heritage - not only to honour the past, but to strengthen our sense of identity and place.

“This project offers a moment for both residents and visitors to pause, connect, and engage with the island in a meaningful way. It’s about creating something lasting for the community, while also inviting people from across the county and beyond to experience the unique spirit of Clare Island.”

Participants will take part in a guided sensory walk, engaging with the island’s textures, sounds and stories. The final sculptural piece will be a lasting tribute to the island’s spirit and the voices of its community.

SÚIL - The Loss of the Light is supported and funded by Cliara Development Company, Clare Island and Creative Ireland through Mayo County Council, as part of their commitment to fostering creativity, inclusion, and cultural connection.

This marks the seventh SÚIL walk, with previous events held on Sherkin, Antigua, Cape Clear, Rathlin and Cobh islands.
