Mayo 'deserves more than crumbs' from its energy wealth
A Mayo elected representative has welcomed the decision of Mayo County Council to back his motion calling for a full review and strengthening of the county’s Community Benefit Scheme - stating that the people of Mayo deserve more than crumbs while energy companies record bumper profits.
Castlebar Independent Councillor Harrt Barrett said: “Families in Mayo are struggling with soaring electricity charges after last week’s spike in prices, while at the same time we are hosting some of the most profitable wind and gas operations in the country.
"The largest wind operator in Mayo pays only half of one per cent of its profits into the community fund.
"Corrib Gas made over a billion euro during the Russia–Ukraine conflict and gave back just 0.001 per cent. Those figures are disgraceful.
"Compare that with what is happening on the ground in Mayo.
"In Castlebar, Meals on Wheels are serving 140 meals a day but had to close their bakery because butter has tripled in price.
"They’ve been forced to replace roast beef with burgers. In Ballina, the service depends on donated beef from local farmers to survive and can no longer afford fish or lamb.
"These are lifeline services for older people and families, and they are being stretched to breaking point.
"Meals on Wheels can’t afford butter, yet energy operators are making billions. That is the contrast that pushed me to bring this motion.
"The council has now agreed that we will review our Community Benefit Scheme, press for increased contributions from energy companies, and put in place a plan to deal with the government’s new Private Wires policy.
"This is about fairness. If Mayo hosts energy projects that generate huge profits, then Mayo people should see a fair return. My motion is a step in that direction."
