Mayo Culture Night spotlight on Claremorris cuisine

BÍGÍ linn for the Food & Drink Tour of Claremorris this Friday (September 19) from 5 to 7 p.m. when Gnó Mhaigh Eo Culture Night event celebrates the fantastic gnólachtaí agus bia den scoth atá ar fáil i gClár Chlainne Mhuiris. This is also a great opportunity to practice your cúpla focal.

This event brings bia and cultúr le chéile to showcase the Claremorris businesses and the fantastic food and drink that they have on offer.

Claremorris has a fantastic mix of restaurants and something to suit everyone. From Korea to Spain and Kiltimagh to Swinford, tá bia áitiúil agus idirnáisiúnta den scoth le fáil anseo. The calibre of food in Claremorris is outstanding and is a must-do destination for food lovers with award-winning restaurants, local produce and authentic international restaurants.

Learn more about the history and traditions of Claremorris through the food culture. Those who come to the ócáid will learn how the food gets to your plate and you will see the creativity of chefs and local producers. We also see some food from various countries around the world and how they are incorporated into Claremorris.

Culture Night celebrates culture, creativity and the arts and seeks to actively promote the belief that this rich and varied culture is alive, treasured and nurtured in people’s lives. Culture Night is one night where everyone can get involved and soak in our culture in all events.

The night will begin at 5 p.m. At La Casa - Tapas & Wine for a tasting of all things Spanish with a Claremorris twist! The tour then makes its way to The Food Store at 5.30 p.m. to get the story behind the products. This will then be followed by a trip to Olive’s Seoul Food at 6 p.m. for a taste of Korea. And finally, it will finish up in The Old Arch Bar & Bistro to sample some signature dishes at 6.30 p.m.

La Casa - Tapas & Wine, Dalton Street

The tour kicks off in La Casa - Tapas & Wine. This terrific restaurant brings a taste of Spain to Claremorris.

They include fresh, quality local produce as well as products from Spain in their dishes. Their motto is quality and the focus in this restaurant is on creating tasty innovative dishes to suit every palette while reflecting the culture of Spain.

Owners Caroline Boyle Dimitrova and Alex Dimitrov have vast experience in the hospitality industry, winning numerous awards. The mouth-watering menu and terrific food will ensure that you keep coming back. Whether you choose the crisp croquettes stuffed with Spanish ham, chorizo with prawns or the fried cubed potatoes, you will not be disappointed.

The Food Store, Ballyhaunis Road

The Food Store is the second stop of the tour. This family-run traditional store comprising of butchery, bakery and deli has freshly prepared táirgí available in store every day.

They specialise in producing and sourcing the best local and international bia for their customers. There are approximately 200 products produced on site. Delicious breads, cácaí and baked treats are made fresh in store gach lá.

You will hear the story behind the food and then sample the goods.

The Food Store deli produces a wide range of healthy salads, soups and ceapairí alongside hearty meals that are ready to eat or take home and heat. The butchery has a huge selection of ready to cook dishes in beef, lamb, pork and poultry.

Olive’s Seoul Food, Dalton Street, and Mescan Brewery

Olive’s Seoul Food is the third stop of the evening.

With a passion for her culture and food, Olive wants to share the beauty of Korea in this bialann. From Bibimbab to Kimbap, Fried Chicken to Sushi, Olive’s Seoul Food has the best Korean and Irish ingredients so you can have a food experience that you won’t forget.

Olive also makes her own products - Olive's Hand Made Korean Sauces and a range of Kimichi. Kimchi is just one of the numerous traditional Korean fermented dishes made from vegetables and seasonings, however, it is arguably the most important dish for Koreans. You will get an authentic Korean experience in the heart of Claremorris.

Then it’s time to taste a local beer. Mescan Brewery beers are brewed artisanally in small batches with craft, care and attention to detail. Sip and savour this Belgian-style beoir and get a taste of beer that is made in Westport.

Tá siad i mbun gnó for over 10 years and have gone from strength to strength in that time. If you haven’t tried this beer, you are in for a treat!

The Old Arch Bar & Bistro, James’s Street

The final stop of the night is this wonderful eatery, The Old Arch Bar & Bistro, known for its friendly service and warm inviting atmosphere with modern bistro-style cuisine.

Local suppliers from Co. Mhaigh Eo are used and they offer seasonal daily specials. The dinner menu offers a wide rogha of popular dishes including soups and sailéid, iasc and poultry, feoil and vegetarian, and there is a separate children’s menu.

On the tour, you will get a taster of some of the chef’s signature dishes which will be sure to give you a taste for the bia iontach available in this bar and bistro.

Gnó Mhaigh Eo, based in Castlebar, is a business support organisation dedicated to promoting business and the use of the Irish language in commerce as a valuable and profitable economic resource. This year, they chose the Camchuairt Bhia & Dí i gClár Chlainne Mhuiris to showcase the fantastic food culture that is in the region and to also showcase the fantastic gnólachtaí in this industry and what they do.
