School's out as Mayo teacher retires
THE end of the school term this past summer was an emotional time for the pupils and teachers of Gorthaganny National School as it marked the last day of Geraldine Collins' tenure as principal.
Geraldine retired from the post after six years at the helm, having been part of the school teach staff for the past 30 years.
A native of Co. Cork, Geraldine has been a resident in Ballyhaunis since arriving here with her husband, Co. Clare man John Collins, a member of the accountancy team at Dawn Meats on Clare Road.
Geraldine has been hugely popular at the Gorthaganny school over those 30 years and in particular in her role as principal over the past six years, providing wonderful leadership, always putting the school and pupils first in all her dealings, decisions and interactions.
She was the consummate professional and enjoyed a great rapport with pupils, staff and parents. This was very obvious from the amount of tributes that flowed and were paid to her on the day of her retirement.
Geraldine will be missed so much at the Roscommon school, not least for her humour and wit, which was always a striking feature in her role as school principal. She surely leaves a great legacy behind her, but the many memories which she leaves behind will remain with both pupils and teachers for a long time to come.
Geraldine won't be letting the grass beneath her feet now that she has left the classroom. A fine vocalist and solo singer, she is a prominent member of Ballyhaunis Parish Choir.
We take the opportunity of wishing Geraldine many years of happiness and good health in her retirement.
Following Geraldine's retirement, Fearghal Hughes has taken up the role of principal. Mr. Hughes joins Gorthaganny National School from St. Attracta's National School, Ballaghaderreen, where he was assistant principal.
