Major progress on €2m. Mayo water project

MINISTER of State Alan Dillon has welcomed a major step forward for a vital water project in north Mayo, as the €2.1 million scheme has now gone to public tender for design services under the Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme.

The project will finally deliver a treated water connection to 198 households in Porturlin, Carrowteige, Shrataggle and Portacloy areas that have been without a piped water supply for decades.

Said Minister Dillon: “I’m proud to see this long-overdue project moving forward. For far too long, families in these communities have lived without the basic right of clean running water.

“This investment will bring treated water straight to their homes, improving quality of life and ending reliance on unsafe sources.”

The scheme will provide a modern, reliable water system, improving health, hygiene, and daily living standards while boosting local farming, tourism, and economic growth.

Minister Dillon added: “This is about fairness. Clean water isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity. This government is backing rural communities and making sure no one is left behind. I’ve been working closely with Mayo County Council and local groups to ensure this project keeps moving quickly.”

The Multi-Annual Rural Water Programme is focused on upgrading rural water systems, tackling long-standing infrastructure gaps, and supporting rural development.

“I want to commend the people of Porturlin, Carrowteige, Shrataggle, and Portacloy for their resilience,” said Minister Dillon. “Their determination has helped drive this project forward, and I’ll continue to work to ensure it is delivered on time and to a high standard.”
