Comic Fest returns to Mayo County Library

COMIC Fest returns to Mayo Library for a third year and it is set to be bigger and better than ever.

The big day takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, in Castlebar Library. In true Comic Fest style, the line-up is full of things to see and do for everyone.

There will be opportunities to create your own comics, try out Dungeons & Dragons, build some Lego creations and write your own adventure stories. While you're busy getting creative, you might even see a few familiar faces, super and otherwise. That’s not to mention the hundreds of comic books and graphic novels for every age group that fill the shelves.

This project has been made possible by Mayo County Council and Creative Ireland through the Creative Mayo Community Grant Scheme. With this funding and using local libraries as a base, the library team has been working hard to make as many creative opportunities available as possible for people across Mayo.

Already this year, with the excellent work of Melanie Whelan and the help of Foróige, they held four workshops for teens where they had an opportunity to unleash their creativity in the form of zines. Made to share with friends, family and the community, these workshops saw the creation of some fantastic publications!

Which reminds us, Thursday, September 25, sees the return of the Teen Evening of Creativity in Castlebar Library. Starting at 5.45 p.m. the library will be showcasing the fantastic work of those young people who created zines over the summer. Why not come along to meet these young authors and illustrators as well as Melanie Whelan, the Westport-based artist. There will also be a Sketchbook Club, Boardgame Club, Lego Club and Creative Writing session all for teens only running from 6.30 to 8 p.m.

As always in the library, all events are FREE but some workshops will require booking. While you’re there, why not sign up to the library (also free!), get your library card and access more events like this throughout the year.

For all Comic Fest related news and events make sure to find the library on Facebook and Instagram or contact comicfest@mayococo.ie. Looking forward to seeing you there!
