Mayo diaspora officer role mooted by councillor

A DIASPORA officer should be appointed within Mayo County Council.

The suggestion was made by Councillor Ger Deere on the back of a hugely successful trip to the Milwaukee Irish Festival where Mayo was showcased to an appreciative audience.

Mayo was the leading council at the event, with their stand the envy of the five or six other local authorities in attendance, with queues every day, he said.

The council in Mayo should continue its role as a leader in this area with the appointment of a diaspora officer, suggested Councillor Deere.

The diaspora want connections and there is huge potential, he said, with many of them talking about coming back.
