Mayo town marks centenary of famed fiddler and composer

THE John McFadden Festival committee hosted a special commemoration, on the historic viaduct in Newport, to honour the 100th anniversary of the passing of John McFadden, one of Ireland’s most celebrated fiddlers and composers of traditional music.

Born in Carrowmore, Newport, McFadden is remembered for his masterful fiddling style and enduring contribution to the Irish traditional repertoire, specifically Capt. Francis O’Neill’s collection. A figure of great respect in the world of traditional music, his tunes remain part of sessions and performances across the globe, continuing to inspire musicians a century later.

The commemoration drew local musicians of all ages, who gathered with fiddles, bodhrans, concertinas and flutes to pay a musical tribute to the man himself.

Together with Julie Langan, they performed a selection of McFadden’s compositions, filling the evening air with the rhythms and melodies that have stood the test of time.

The viaduct, an iconic Newport landmark, provided a fitting backdrop for the event, symbolising the bridge between generations that McFadden’s music represents.

Committee member Michelle Finnerty warmly welcomed attendees and spoke of McFadden’s legacy, emphasising his role not just as a musician but as a composer of intricate and joyful tunes but as a contributor to one of the most famous collections of Irish traditional music and a cultural figure whose music continues to connect people to their heritage. She reflected on the importance of celebrating musicians who shaped tradition and on the pride Newport takes in remembering one of its own.

The event was both poignant and uplifting as young learners and seasoned performers alike played side by side, embodying the spirit of community that defines Irish tradition music.

The John McFadden festival committee continues to plan the upcoming festival in February 2026 and all are welcome.
