Mayo authority part of positive multi-agency discussions on protecting Lough Corrib
THE Western Regional Operational Committee (ROC) for Water Framework Directive (WFD) coordination met last week at the Anglers' Rest Hotel in Headford to discuss issues affecting Lough Corrib.
The ROC brings together agencies including Galway, Mayo and Roscommon County Councils, Galway City Council, the Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, OPW, EPA, Inland Fisheries Ireland, and LAWPRO. It serves as a platform for collaboration to improve water quality and environmental outcomes under the WFD.
The meeting focused on the Lough Corrib catchment, with presentations from public bodies and community groups working to protect and restore the lake.
Key pressures such as agriculture and hydromorphological changes - alterations to river habitats and flows - were discussed. The EPA and LAWPRO outlined current water quality conditions and ongoing challenges.
The OPW shared updates on drainage maintenance and environmental management of the Corrib Drainage Scheme, including feasibility studies exploring nature based solutions. A successful river enhancement project on the Headford Stream (Annacutra) was highlighted for its positive impact on fish populations.
Galway County Council reported improved compliance among farmers in the catchment between 2022 and '25. ASSAP outlined funding opportunities through the Farming for Water EIP, available to farmers in Priority Areas for Action to support water-friendly practices.
Community groups, including the newly formed Corrib Catchment Partnership (CCP), also participated. CCP aims to coordinate voluntary efforts across the catchment and voiced concerns about threats to Lough Corrib, including declining water quality, algal blooms, and invasive species.
The Owenriff catchment was highlighted for elevated phosphate and ammonium levels, which are impacting freshwater pearl mussels. CCP called for stronger action from state agencies and is actively supporting the Farming for Water EIP through community advisor Peter Higgins.
RoseMary McDonnagh of the Kilcoona/Caherlistrane Group Water Scheme and CCP said: “The ROC was a brilliant opportunity to showcase CCP’s work and connect with other organisations.”
Dr. Bernie White, LAWPRO’s western regional coordinator, added: “We were delighted to welcome CCP. It’s clear we share a common goal - a passion for water quality and a sustainable future for Lough Corrib. Working together, we can achieve more.”
