Mayo mourns passing of much-loved young sports star
The death of Richard Loftus, Foxford Road, Ballina, has evoked a tremendous sense of sadness and loss in the community.
He died peacefully at his home on his birthday (October 1) surrounded by his family.
Predeceased by his grandparents Leo Loftus and Elizabeth Duffy, Richard was beloved eldest son of Marc and Deirdre and an amazing big brother to Harry, Chloe and Zara.
He will be so dearly missed by his heartbroken family, grandparents Mary Loftus and John Duffy, his extended family and his large circle of wonderful friends.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.
In a tribute, Ballina Rugby Club described Richard as 'a young man who made a huge impression on all fortunate enough to encounter him'.
Club president Daragh Quinn stated: "A wonderful young member of our club, Richard passed away after battling illness very bravely.
"His passing brings great sadness to his family, our club and our community. Richard and his family have been at the epicentre of everything in Ballina Rugby Club for all of his short life.
"The Loftus family are in the midst of our thoughts and prayers at this sad time."
Ballina Stephenites joined in paying tribute to the deceased.
A club statement said: "Richard represented the club with distinction at underage level and is fondly remembered by his former teammates and all associated with Ballina Stephenites.
"A true gentleman, Richard will always be held in the highest regard and remembered with deep affection."
Another warm tribute on social media stated: "Richard fought a brave battle with courage and dignity and inspired so many people, not just those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
"His determination and positivity during his illness, so bravely borne, was an inspiration to us all and our memories of him, throughout his life, will remain in our hearts forever."
Richard will repose at McGowan's Funeral Home, Ballina, on Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Funeral will arrive to St. Muredach's Cathedral on Saturday afternoon for Requiem Mass at 1.30 p.m, followed by burial at Leigue Cemetery.
