South Mayo boost: €18m. for upgrade of Claremorris waste water treatment plant

Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the commencement of a major €18 million upgrade to the Claremorris Wastewater Treatment Plant, marking a significant milestone in Uisce Éireann’s ongoing investment across County Mayo.

“This is a transformative project for Claremorris,” said Minister Dillon.

“It will not only improve the quality of our local waterways and meet important environmental standards, but also lay the groundwork for future growth and development in the town.”

The upgrade will increase the plant’s design capacity by 65%, from a population equivalent of 5,333 to 8,800, ensuring it can meet current demands and future needs.

The works will also enhance treatment performance, helping to protect biodiversity and comply with the Water Framework Directive.

Patrick Greene, programme manager at Uisce Éireann, added: “This investment reflects our dedication to safeguarding the environment while enabling sustainable development.

"We’re grateful for the cooperation of local residents and businesses as we carry out these vital works.”

Veolia Water Ireland is delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Construction will take place within the existing site boundary and is expected to be completed by autumn 2027.

While no roadworks are planned, residents may notice increased construction traffic in the area. Uisce Éireann will continue to keep all stakeholders informed throughout the project.

Minister Dillon added: “This investment sends a clear message Claremorris is growing, thriving, and being equipped for the future.

"I look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on our environment, our economy, and the quality of life for local residents.”
