Storm Amy: Mayo parishes hit by power outages while airport impacted
Towns and village throughout Mayo are being hit by power outages as Storm Amy has made landfall in the county.
With the orange wind warning having kicked-in since 2 p.m., early effects are already being felt.
Apart from a large number of cancellations - including all of the Mayo GAA's championship semi-finals scheduled for the weekend - a number of communities are already dealing with power outages.
They include Achill, Ballina, Belmullet, Bellacorrick, Charlestown, Crossmolina Garrymore and Breaffy, Castlebar.
Almost 2,000 homes and business in the Ardnaree area of Ballina are currently without power.
More communities are likely to be similarly impact over the coming hours.
A fault which occurred in Bangor Erris, and effected 2,729 customers, was restored within a short period.
Meanwhile, Inbound flights from Edinburgh, East Midlands and Liverpool airports are diverting away from Ireland West Airport Knock to various other airports.
The airport has said they are hoping to operate outbound flights, as soon as wind levels drop to an acceptable level.
Mayo County Council has confirmed several road closures and diversions due to damage from Storm Amy.
Contractors have removed fallen trees, blocking the R312, and the route is reopened.
The L-1611 Roundfort/Ballinrobe Road is closed, with diversions in place.
The L-1609 Kilmaine to Roundfort Rd. is closed due to fallen tree. Local diversions are in place
Trees were reported down on the following roads in and around Ballina; R294 Behy, N26 near Hollister, R310 Barnfield, R314 Rathroeen. Roads are passable with care, and crews will attend when it’s safe to do so.
A section of the North Mall, Westport, is closed due to an unstable tree.
