Mayo business forum discusses advantages of transition to low carbon future

MAYO businesses have heard how the transition to a low carbon future brings competitive advantage.

An AIB customer event in Breaffy House Hotel featured a panel discussion with businesses from the area who have introduced and embedded sustainable changes.

With demand for sustainable loans among businesses rising, approximately 50 people attended the event hosted by AIB chief customer officer Orlaith Ryan, with broadcaster Jonathan McCrea as MC.

Green, clean renewable energy offers a multitude of benefits, not least resilience in future proofing businesses, as well as competitive advantage.

Among the local speakers was David Kiely, director, Jennings O’Donovan & Partners Limited. David has over 42 years of experience in the renewables sector, including as project manager/director for the construction of over 80 wind farm, solar farm and battery energy storage (BESS) projects.

As maintenance manager at Breaffy House Resort, a key aspect of David Carroll's professional ethos is a commitment to sustainability. Throughout his career, David has established a proven track record of both initiating and maintaining impactful environmental initiatives, helping to integrate sustainable practices directly into hotel operations.

Seán Corcoran, group managing director for Electric Skyline, also spoke. Founded in 2007, with over 20 years’ experience in the lighting sector, Seán oversees all aspects of Electric Skyline's operations nationwide.

Said Ms. Ryan: “AIB is delighted to provide a forum in Mayo where local businesses can come together and share their knowledge and experience, providing inspiration to act as we transition to a low carbon economy. We can see that many of our customers in the area are already adopting more sustainable practices and demand for green finance is increasing.

“Sustainability is no longer just about asking customers to do the right thing but recognising that the transition to a low carbon economy is underway and AIB is here to support them. That responsibility to support our customers can be seen through our low-cost Business Sustainability Loan, and our Steps to Sustainability guide for SMEs.”
