Mayo tributes to former Enniscrone hotelier Tommy Battle on his passing

The death of Tommy Battle, Dún Ard, and formerly of The Atlantic Hotel, Enniscrone, is deeply mourned.

An outgoing and good-natured personality, Tommy was widely popular in the community.

The deceased was a founder member of Ballina Town Football Club.

In a tribute, the club stated: "Tommy will be fondly remembered by everyone associated with the Town.

"With his wife Angela (née Nicholson), Tommy ran the Atlantic Hotel as well as Tom's Top Ten, an iconic pub and entertainment centre situated where the Ocean Sands hotel stands today.

"He was born in Corcoran Terrace and attended Culleens NS and St. Muredach's College (to which he won a scholarship) and was there at the very start of the Ballina Town FC journey – a journey that began in 1961 when the club was founded as St. Patrick's FC."

Club chairman Mark Beattie added: “He was a club legend."

Many other tributes have been paid to him on social media.

"One of life's greats who brought joy to so many," one stated.

Another said: "A gentleman seems to be the common trend and he epitomised every bit of that word. Great memories as a young lad in Tom's Top Ten, always welcoming."

"He was a lovely man and neighbour, and Enniscrone will be a sadder, quieter place without him. His kindness and gift for a sing-song will be long remembered," a further tribute observed.

Predeceased by his adored wife Angela, brothers Mike and George, sisters Annie and Una, and parents Bridget and Michael, Tommy is sadly missed by his sons and daughters Karin (Garvey), Tommy, Niki, Barry and Steven, grandchildren Emma, Luke, Angela, Rebecca, Joshua, Hannah, Thomas, Jonathan, Isabella, Alexander, Matilda, Blaise and Theo, sister Bríd, brothers John and Anthony, daughters-in-law Rohna and Sarah, son-in-law David (Garvey), brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and a very wide circle of friends, to whom sympathy is tendered.

Reposing at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral will arrive at The Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Enniscrone on Saturday for Requiem Mass at 12 noon followed by burial in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Kilglass, Enniscrone.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
