Quality heifers a good trade, with €10,800 top price at Mayo mart

THERE was a good trade at Balla Mart on Saturday, especially in the heifers where the quality was really good, with one BBX selling for €10,800.

Averages were well up also for store bullocks, while heavier bullocks 500kg plus remained much the same as last week.

Bullocks 300kg to 400kg averaged €5.11/kg, lighter stores around 350kg saw the best all making over €5.50/kg, while bullocks 400kg to 500kg averaged €5.06/kg and heavier stock €4.73/kg.

A farmer from Mayo Abbey had some smashing Continental bullocks with one Charolais bullock sold for €3,560.

A farmer from Castlebar had an April ‘24 bullock, 375kg, that made €2,460.

A fine sale of heifers saw just over 400 lots, with nearly a full clearance. Lighter store heifers 300kg to 400kg averaged €4.72/kg, heifers 400kg to 500kg averaged €4.87/kg and those 500kg plus averaged €5.02/kg.

A farmer from Loughlynn had 15 serious heifers and some made spectacular prices, with a lot of online interest.

The best, a smashing 620kg BBX heifer, made €10,800 (€17.42/kg), and a 655kg BBX heifer made €9,700, but these were not alone as there was seven lots that exceeded €9/kg.

Dry cows 500kg plus averaged €3.71/kg. Tops was a 13-year-old cow weighing 930kg that made €3,700 for a farmer from Tubbercurry.

There was a special sale of in-calf heifers by a Claremorris farmer who presented some lovely red Limousin heifers, with the best making over €4,900.

Best price this week was a January 2023 LMX due in January that was bought for €5,400 from a Claremorris farmer.
