Intimate Mayo gigs for an artist more accustomed to Glastonbury and Other Voices

An acclaimed singer-songwriter more accustomed to Glastonbury, Other Voices and Dublin’s Olympia Theatre will play two intimate shows in Mayo’s newest independent music venue, NCF in Ballina, this coming Saturday and Sunday (October 18 and 19).

On social media in August, David Keenan announced to his thousands of followers that he wanted to play the hidden gems in Ireland and asked for venue suggestions.

He was overwhelmed with the response before just 11 venues were selected nationwide, including the quirky NCF (formerly a hairdresser's) in Ballina.

Of his Chasing Myth Irish tour, Keenan said: “Ahead of the release of my new album, Modern Mythologies, in November, I’m taking to the road this October to play hidden gems and hallowed rooms. I’m chasing myth around Ireland, seeking out local stories and folklore as I go. It’s not about the size of the room; it’s about the people, the place and the music.”

That sense of adventure takes him to Mayo this weekend.

Dundalk’s David Keenan has been described as equal parts poet, street singer, rabble rouser, storyteller and one of Ireland’s most captivating live performers. He’s also toured with Hozier, David Gray, Dermot Kennedy, Counting Crows, Snow Patrol, Richard Thompson and Rodrigo y Gabriela.

NCF in Ballina, operated by a local arts collective, is credited with rejuvenating night-life in the town and providing a valued platform for local talent. The bring-your-own-beer (BYOB) venue is already home to regular punk gigs and techno nights, and has hosted a number of international touring acts.

Concert attendees won’t quite believe their eyes in this unique venue as the wash basins from this building’s former life as a hairdressing salon can still be seen! These days the highlights are all of a musical kind.
