Mayo event passes on vital road safety messages to older community members

MAYO County Council's Road Safety Office, in collaboration with the Mayo Older Person’s Council and Mayo Local Community Safety Partnership, hosted ‘Active Living and Safe Driving: A Community Event' in Breaffy House Resort.

The event promoted active living while staying safe when using the roads.

Councillor Alma Gallagher, who opened the event, said: “Today is about bringing our community together to celebrate active living and to reinforce the importance of road safety.

“Whether we are behind the wheel, on a bike or crossing the street, we all share the same roads and the same goal at that is getting home safely. Active living is vital to a healthy, connected and sustainable community.”

The chief executive of Mayo County Council, Kevin Kelly, also welcomed attendees, saying: “Today’s event is all about partnerships and working together for the safety and well-being of all, and I am thrilled to see so many different partners come together for to promote road safety and active living.

“Active living, whether you are walking, cycling, jogging, it’s about more than movement. It’s about healthy people, connected communities and vibrant, sustainable towns and villages.”

The event was a key part of Mayo Road Safety Office's education and promotion of road safety awareness during Road Safety Week 2025. The event also promoted healthy lifestyles and community engagement in older members of the county’s population.

Presentations were delivered by a number of guest speakers, including Mayo Road Safety Office, Mayo Sports Partnership, Mayo Fire Service, Local Link Mayo and An Garda Síochána.

The presentations informed and engaged attendees on the importance of road safety, home fire safety, stay active while aging along with information on the new and enhanced routes provided by Local Link Mayo.

The aim of the event was to empower older members of the community in feeling confident, active and driving safely and informing them of public transport options, so they can maintain their independence, safety and quality of life as they age.
