Mayo man completes 2,400km round trip to the Sahara Desert
Irishtown native Tom Monaghan has completed a 2,400km round trip to the Sahara Desert, and he also placed a Mayo flag in the sand near the Moroccan Algerian border.
Tom Monaghan has been a lifelong Mayo supporter and has attended many All-Ireland finals, and for 10 years was a goalkeeper for Davitts GAA Club.
Beyond GAA, Tom has always had a passion for community and representation and previously served as communications and entertainments officer with the UCD Students’ Union for two years.
Tom also represented his school and county in the European Youth Parliament and currently sits on the Care Experienced Expert Panel for TUSLA, a government-funded project focused on improving the lives of young people in foster care.
Speaking about his trip to the Sahara, Tom said: “This adventure to the Sahara was about more than travel, it was about pride, belonging, and the strength of community.
"Bringing the green and red of Mayo to one of the most remote places on Earth was my way of honouring the incredible spirit of home that connects us all, no matter how far we go.”
