Woman airlifted to Mayo hospital after fall on Croagh Patrick

A woman was airlifted to hospital on Sunday afternoon after sustaining head injuries while descending Croagh Patrick.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. when the woman, who was climbing the mountain with her husband, slipped on the track about halfway down and suffered an injury to her face and head.

Feeling unable to continue, she contacted emergency services for assistance.

Members of the Mayo Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) were tasked to the scene alongside the Coast Guard’s Rescue 118 helicopter.

Rescue 118 landed on the shoulder of the mountain, where the casualty was assessed by first responders before being helped to the helicopter for transport to Mayo University Hospital.

The operation concluded at approximately 4.30 p.m.

In a statement, the MMRT wished the woman a full and speedy recovery and praised the Coast Guard crew for their swift response, noting that their involvement can more than halve the time from callout to hospital in such emergencies.
