First Choice Credit Union celebrates International Credit Union Day
ON Thursday, October 16, First Choice Credit Union will proudly stand with financial cooperatives around the world to celebrate International Credit Union (ICU) Day 2025.
As we mark the 77th anniversary of this global occasion, we reflect on the powerful ethos of our movement: Cooperation for a Prosperous World. This year’s theme highlights our collective commitment to a future built on mutual support and financial empowerment.
Since its founding, the credit union movement has been a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change. The 'people helping people' philosophy is not just a slogan - it is the very foundation of our work.
At First Choice Credit Union, we believe that every local effort, from a single loan to a student bursary, contributes to a more prosperous and equitable world.
Commitment from credit unions remains unwavering to deliver financial solutions that prioritise members' needs over profit. From our trusted in person services to our convenient online presence, credit unions continue to support communities across the island.
Through our bursaries, community sponsorships and donations, community fund and more, credit unions have been a strong pillar in giving back to the community.
Shane Melia, marketing manager at First Choice Credit Union, said: “First Choice Credit Union has proudly served our members for almost 60 years with over 41,000 members across our Common Bond of Achill, Balla, Ballyhaunis, Castlebar, Kiltimagh and Swinford. During the past year alone, FCCU has issued €26m in loans to our members, contributing to the economic wellbeing of the local community.
“As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, First Choice Credit Union is dedicated to the financial health of its members, offering a comprehensive range of services tailored to their needs and the needs of the community. Our commitment to community is steadfast, as demonstrated by our contributions of our €150,000 Community Fund, sponsorships and donations of over €20,000 and bursaries worth €5,000.”
To mark ICU Day, First Choice Credit Union will have giveaways, treats, fun activity sheets and competitions for all to enjoy. Celebrations will take place on the following days in each respective branch - Achill, Castlebar and Swinford branches on October 16, Ballyhaunis and Kiltimagh branches on October 17, and Balla branch on October 21.
