Novice drivers caught speeding on busy Mayo route

Mayo Roads Policing Unit detected a number of motorists exceeding the 100km/h speed limit during recent speed checkpoints on the N5 in Charlestown.

Among those stopped was a novice driver travelling at 150km/h in the 100km/h zone.

The motorist received a €160 fine and three penalty points for the offence.

A second novice driver was also detected travelling at 138km/h in the same area.

That driver received a €160 fine and three penalty points, as well as an additional €60 fine for failing to display a front number plate.

Gardaí have reminded drivers that novice motorists face stricter penalty point rules.

The disqualification threshold for novice drivers is seven penalty points, if a novice driver accumulates seven or more points within their first two years of driving, they face an automatic six-month disqualification.

In addition, Gardaí highlighted that a fixed charge penalty notice can now be issued for missing, non-conforming, or unclear registration plates.

Registration plates must consist of black letters and numbers on a white reflective background, display the county of registration in Irish, and include the EU flag with the IRL identifier on the left-hand side. Since July 2025, electric vehicle plates may also feature an optional green stripe.

Gardaí are urging all motorists to drive safely, observe speed limits, and ensure vehicles are fully compliant with road traffic regulations.
