Call to reinstate lollipop person at Mayo school crossing

THE lollipop person's position at a crossing used by schoolchildren in Westport must be reinstated as soon as possible.

Safety concerns for children crossing to primary school on the Newport Road have been aired by local councillors at a municipal meeting.

They were told Mayo County Council is exploring where to get an additional person for the job.

Councillor Brendan Mulroy said there is a pedestrian crossing at the location but children, by their nature, will just run across and it's becoming a death trap.

The lollipop person, he noted, had been there since he was a child and he wanted to see them back again.

Councillor Johnny O'Malley said it was very serious that they had been taken away from there, sharing his opinion also that the school should never have been built there but on a greenfield site.

Someone is going to get hurt, he warned.

The members were told the council is striving to resolve the matter.
