Mayo wall rebuilt five days after councillor raised issue at meeting
NINE months after it was knocked during Storm Éowyn, a wall has been rebuilt in Castlebar.
The rebuild comes five days after Councillor Ger Deere raised the matter at a meeting where he hit out about council staff being prevented by health and safety from doing the repairs.
The wall was rebuilt on Saturday last and while much welcome, Councillor Deere said he now has more questions than answers about the wall.
He commented: “It's great to see it rebuilt but how much did it cost on a weekend to bring in an outside contractor who's up to his eyes with carrying out essential repairs and renovating council dwellings when we have council staff who are well capable and have built several walls on a much bigger scale in the past.”
He told last week's meeting how he was informed that council employees weren't allowed to carry out the work for health and safety reasons.
The section of wall, now rebuilt, is at the rear of Mayo County Council's offices in Castlebar, between the car park at Mayo University Hospital.
It had been fenced off, with railing around it, since the storm.
