Progress on large-scale sporting campus for Mayo

MINISTER of State Alan Dillon has welcomed confirmation of further progress on the multi-million-euro Mayo Community Sports Campus in Castlebar, describing it as a 'hugely significant project for Castlebar and for County Mayo'.

This transformative project at Lough Lannagh is now progressing to the design phase, he confirmed.

Mayo County Council are seeking tenders for the appointment of a civil engineering-led integrated design team to oversee the next stage of the sports campus.

Minister Dillon explained: “The successful team will be responsible for providing comprehensive design, procurement, and project management services for this ambitious development, which secured €7.5 million in government funding under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF).”

Located on a greenfield site at Knockaphunta, near Lough Lannagh, the project will include a multi-lane international standard athletics track, floodlit multi-sport playing fields with 4G synthetic surfaces for GAA, soccer, and rugby, along with modern facilities designed to support high performance, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.

Minister Dillon emphasised the project’s wider impact, stating: “This is a really important step forward, not just for Castlebar but for Mayo and the entire western region. The sports campus will be a game-changer for local sport, community activity, and high-performance development.”

He added: “I will continue to push the delivery of this project as a top priority. It represents one of the most significant sporting investments ever made in Mayo and will stand as a flagship example of what can be achieved through strong local partnership and government support.”

Minister Dillon concluded: “Every euro invested here is an investment in future generations of Mayo sportspeople, those with the ambition to train, compete, and perform to the very best of their ability.”

The tender process marks a critical milestone in realising the vision for a world-class sporting hub for Mayo, with the design team set to shape the delivery of one of the most important community infrastructure projects in the west of Ireland.
